There is something timeless about stepping aboard a riverboat and watching the shoreline drift by. While the beauty of the Mississippi River is unforgettable, the people behind every Padelford Riverboats cruise are what truly make the experience special. From accomplished captains and talented chefs to friendly deckhands and dedicated crew members, every person on board plays a role in creating memorable moments for guests.
At Padelford Riverboats, hospitality and river expertise go hand in hand. Many members of the leadership team began their careers in entry-level positions and worked their way up through years of dedication and hands-on experience. That shared journey creates a culture where every detail matters, resulting in exceptional Mississippi River cruises for every guest.
The People Behind Padelford Riverboats
Padelford Riverboats is owned and managed by Gus and Tammy Gaspardo, along with a team of experienced river professionals who have devoted decades to the company. Their story reflects the values that define Padelford today.
Gus Gaspardo first joined Padelford in 1984 while looking for a summer job during college. Over the next 42 years, he advanced through nearly every position in the company, including senior deckhand, captain, operations manager, general manager, vice president, and ultimately president. Tammy Gaspardo began her Padelford career in 1989 as a deckhand before working her way up to sales manager and vice president. Together, their leadership is built on firsthand knowledge of every aspect of riverboat operations.
Because the leadership team understands each role, from routine maintenance to piloting the vessel, they foster a culture of teamwork, respect, and pride. Their philosophy is simple: every detail contributes to providing guests with the very best the Mississippi River has to offer.
Meet Captain Nick Miller
Captain Nick Miller’s journey with Padelford Riverboats is another example of professional growth built on passion and dedication. After working in a variety of industries, including food service and window washing, Nick joined Padelford in 2019 as a bartender. From there, he became a crew chief, advanced to senior crew, and eventually earned his United States Coast Guard pilot’s license.
As captain and bar manager, Nick begins each day by working alongside a deckhand to prepare the boats for scheduled cruises. Before guests ever step aboard, the vessel is carefully inspected and made ready for the day ahead.
Once underway, safe navigation requires much more than simply steering the boat. Padelford’s vessels are powered by twin engines with independent propellers, driving rudders, and backing rudders. Captain Nick relies on visual navigation, radar, the Automatic Identification System (AIS), and marine radio communication with towboats and railroad bridge operators to safely guide each cruise along the Mississippi River.
For Nick, every day on the river is different.
“The river has her own personality,” he explains. While there are peaceful moments watching the river from the pilot house, every cruise also presents unique opportunities to carefully maneuver a large vessel through changing conditions.
Guests also benefit from Nick’s passion for sharing the river’s history. He enjoys introducing passengers to America’s waterways from a perspective few people ever experience, adding fascinating stories and historical insight throughout the cruise.
A Culinary Experience Led by Chef John Nusser-Cooper
A memorable Mississippi River cruise is about more than beautiful scenery. For many guests, the dining experience is equally unforgettable.
Head Chef John Nusser-Cooper, an award-winning chef and ice sculptor, brings decades of culinary experience and creativity to Padelford Riverboats. After graduating high school in 1998, Chef John attended Saint Paul College’s culinary arts program, where he was introduced to the craft of ice sculpting. That spark of passion led him to spend nearly two decades creating award-winning sculptures for the Saint Paul Winter Carnival and other events throughout the area.
Throughout his career, Chef John has worked with respected organizations including Blue Plate Restaurant Group, Radisson Hotels, Hazeltine Country Club, Copeland’s of New Orleans, The Wienery, and The Pickled Parrot. After spending several years expanding his culinary skills in San Diego, he returned to Minnesota in 2014 to join Padelford Riverboats.
Today, Chef John combines his professional experience with inspiration from local culture, barbecue traditions, music, art, and family recipes to create meals guests consistently praise. His passion for food and hospitality plays an important role in the overall Padelford experience.
The Crew That Brings the River to Life
While the captain and chef lead important parts of the operation, every crew member contributes to creating a welcoming atmosphere on board.
Padelford proudly employs crew members who genuinely enjoy spending time on the Mississippi River. Their enthusiasm is reflected in every interaction with guests.
Whether serving drinks with a smile, sharing a joke while taking an order, helping passengers board safely, or pointing out a bald eagle soaring overhead while clearing dinner plates, the crew transforms an enjoyable cruise into a memorable experience. Their friendly personalities and knowledge of the river help guests feel connected to both the vessel and the surrounding landscape.
Working Together for a Seamless Guest Experience
One of the qualities that sets Padelford Riverboats apart is the strong collaboration between the leadership team, captain, chef, and crew.
Because many leaders have worked their way through multiple positions within the company, they understand how every department contributes to the guest experience. That appreciation creates an environment where teamwork comes naturally.
From preparing delicious meals and safely navigating the river to providing attentive service throughout the cruise, every team member works toward a common goal of delivering an exceptional experience from boarding to docking.
What Guests Remember Most
Padelford Riverboats consistently receives positive feedback from guests who appreciate the combination of scenic beauty, outstanding service, and delicious food.
While Minnesota’s beautiful weather often enhances the experience, guests frequently compliment the crew’s friendliness, the quality of Chef John’s meals, and the welcoming atmosphere created by everyone on board.
That dedication is no accident. The team’s shared passion for the Mississippi River and commitment to excellent hospitality are evident throughout every cruise.
